Eleventh Hour: CBS Cancels Paranormal TV Show, No Season Two

Time has run out for CBS’ science-based drama. Based on a British series of the same name, the network has cancelled Eleventh Hour after 18 episodes.

Eleventh Hour revolves around a team of scientists and FBI agents who work to solve strange crimes that involve science and possible paranormal activity. The drama stars Rufus Sewell, Marley Shelton, and Omar B. Miller.

Debuting on October 9, 2008, the show started out with an audience of 11.37 million viewers and a 3.2/9 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. The season ended up averaging about 12 million. While that looks fine on its own, the series consistently lost a large percentage of its CSI lead-in.

The show’s been “on the bubble” for awhile and now, the network has decided to cancel it. All of the show’s episodes have aired and there’s been no word on a DVD release.

Everyone always uses Moonlighting as the evidence that RST ruins a show. I have problems with this, since, as much as I liked that show, to me the problem was that Maddie and David didn’t really like each other. Yes, they had incredible chemistry and were obviously were attracted to each other, but that was it. Once they had sex, there was no where for their relationship to go.

Not that I think Jacob and Rachel would end up in bed in a second season of EH. Over the course of season one you could see the growing friendship – the teasing, the conversations about their pasts. I think the underlying issue on season two would be their recognizing their growing attraction to each other. And realizing/fearing that acting on said attraction would cost them a partnership that they both have come to value.

At this point, the second season could begin a few months post-Medea. I think the whole point of having Rachel injured was to deal with Marley Shelton’s maternity leave. Well, she’s ready to be back to work by now (baby was born in Sept.) Contrary to others, I think Hood would have gritted his teeth and made an effort to get along with whoever was assigned to him. I mean the man isn’t stupid, I’m sure in the real world (and even in the EH world) there would have been some gossip when Hood’s series of handlers ended abrupty when he was assigned a good-looking blonde. So he would have put up with Rachel’s replacement publically, but privately would have complained constantly to Rachel.

I would want to series to stay with real science, there are enough shows out there dealing with science fiction. To me, that was one of the most interesting things about EH, that the science, if not completely accurate, was probable, and in many cases spot on. They raised some interesting issues. And rather than have sub-plot issues dealing with their personal lives, I would rather they reveal information about the characters through the issues they face on the cases.

And I would not create a Moriarity type character for EH. I find those types of reoccuring characters boring. Geppetto was fine, since it was only two episodes. So, I guess a criminal who got away could be caught later in the season. To me, creating this type of character smacks of the writers running out of ideas, a la Criminal Minds and CSI.

Omar Benson Miller

Omar Benson Miller as FBI Special Agent Felix Lee (Episodes 14-18) – introduced later in the series when he asks (although it is later discovered that he begged) to help Jacob Hood on a case. After solving the case, he asks to work with Hood full time, stating that the work they do is amazing. Felix is given the job and works as somewhat of a scout, helping out the team with heading to the location and gathering the material they need by the time Hood and Young get there. Though he likes the job, Felix feels underappreciated due to the lack of praise for the amount of work he does.

Marley Shelton

Marley Shelton as FBI Special Agent Rachel Young – Hood’s handler. Though she is employed to protect his life, she has also said that her job is “to protect him from himself” – something he makes very difficult for her. Hood might annoy her from time to time but she does care about his well-being, viewing his many techniques with a kind of exasperated affection, though she is frequently embarrassed by and for him. Rachel mainly gets annoyed when he gets too caught up in an investigation and does something stupid, or when he does things like accidentally sit on his panic button. It is noted throughout the series that Dr. Hood is her only friend, though male characters frequently flirt with her. She is the latest in a line of Hood’s protectors, but she refuses to let him “drive her away like he did those others.”

Rufus Sewell

Rufus Sewell as Dr. Jacob Hood – a science adviser to the FBI, called in to investigate crimes that may have a scientific explanation. Though Hood is extremely brilliant, he sometimes gets lost in his own thoughts, and this, coupled with his low attention span and poor social skills, causes him to be viewed as odd. He also has few instincts of self-preservation or danger, causing him to often do things that put his life in jeopardy, such as standing in front of a fleeing suspect’s car to get the license plate, something that frequently annoys Rachel. Additionally, he does not know how to drive well, leading Rachel to insist she do all the driving. Hood appears to be an atheist and is knowledgeable on a number of scientific, mathematical and philosophical topics. He nursed his wife, who died of cancer, throughout her illness.

I think one of my favorite moments is from ‘Surge.’ Rachel and Hood are waiting for the “entry specialist” so they can break into the lab. Rachel asks Hood how he got the job with the FBI. He tells her the story about how he and Frank became friends in college and his car that he modified to run on vegtable oil.I think this represents the first time that Rachel asks Hood a personal, non-case related question.

One of my favorite quotes is from ‘Subway.’ They have just figured out all the poison victims were in the same subway station. Felix asks Hood what he thinks is going on and Hood replies that he doesn’t know, it could be anything, “snakes on the train.”

Any time Hood says something popculture-y – snakes on a train, as was previously mentioned. The bit about the death metal made me lawl too. And the Godzilla/whatchermacallit explanation.

Oh shut up, so I find guys spouting sci-fi trivia and listening to metal hot.

A favorite Felix moment from Olfactus:

Felix has just spun the story about being a bouncer at a strip club to the security guy who killed the model. The security guy says something along the lines of how he and the model had a “connection.” Felix looks at the guy incredulous and says “A connection? You and that fine model? Are you on medication?”

Eleventh Hour Actress Marley Shelton and Husband Expecting First Child

Actress Marley Shelton, who stars as Special Agent Rachel Young on CBS’ series “Eleventh Hour”, is pregnant with her producer husband Beau Flynn’s baby. Confirming the news is her representative, who informs People that the star is expected to give birth to the infant this fall.

The baby will be the first child for both Marley and Beau, who have been married since 2001. It is not known whether the pair has found out the sex of the baby.
